How Chunky Move comes across

Chunky Move is plainly not a children's studio but a professional contemporary dance company, and its site reads accordingly. It describes itself as creating "bold, visually striking and genre defying dance works" — "experiments that merge the body with other forms" — and names its values as "fearless experimentation, rigour in practice, deep collaboration, and our place in dance sector leadership." The framing is institutional and artform-driven: founded in 1995 by Gideon Obarzanek, later led by Anouk Van Dijk, and now under Artistic Director Antony Hamilton and Executive Director Kristy Ayre, it presents "a dense program of major works, commissions, residencies, workshops and public classes." Its studios sit in the same Southbank building as ACCA. The relevant point for a member of the public is that access comes through "public classes," not graded tuition — the impression is of a serious creative organisation whose teaching is an extension of professional practice, suited to adults and committed movers rather than beginners seeking a recreational school.
