How to choose your child's first dance school
You don't have to get this perfect. Here's what actually matters in the first year.
If you're reading this, there's a good chance a small person in your house has started spinning around the kitchen, and you're trying to work out what to do about it. It can feel like a bigger decision than it is — there are a lot of schools, the websites all sound the same, and nobody hands you a way to tell them apart.
So, first: you don't have to get this perfect. The goal of a first dance school isn't to launch a career. It's a room your child wants to come back to. Get that right and almost everything else sorts itself out. What follows is what we'd tell a friend who asked us where to start.
Start with what you can actually get to
The single most reliable predictor of whether the first year works isn't the school — it's the drive. A class you can reach on a Saturday morning without rearranging your life is a class your child will still be attending in October. A wonderful studio forty minutes away is a class you'll quietly stop going to by week six.
So begin with geography. Look at the suburb you live in and the two or three next to it, and see who's there. Everything else on this page is how to choose between the schools in that radius — not how to find the best school in the city.
What matters in the first year (and what doesn't)
What matters most is the teacher and the room: whether the person at the front likes small children and can hold a class of them, and whether your child walks out wanting to go back. You can read most of that in a single trial class.
What matters less than the websites imply: the building, the awards, the brand, the list of styles. A school can have a wall of trophies and a teacher your four-year-old is frightened of. Another can run out of a church hall with one teacher whose name is on the door and forty years of local kids behind her. At this age, the second one is often the better choice.
And what doesn't matter yet at all: picking a "track". Your child does not need to choose between ballet and hip hop, or recreational and competitive, at four or five or six. The first year is for finding out whether they enjoy moving in a room with other children. That's the whole job.
The styles, in plain terms
Most schools teach several of these, and a young child will often do a mixed class that touches a few. You don't need to specialise — but it helps to know what the words mean.
Ballet is the technical foundation a lot of other styles build on; it's structured and progresses slowly. Jazz is upbeat and performance-oriented. Tap is rhythm made with the feet, and many small children love the noise. Hip hop is high-energy and contemporary, usually the one that needs the least convincing. Contemporary and lyrical are more expressive and come a little later. Acro blends dance with gymnastics. For a first year, a general or "combo" class that samples a few is often the gentlest start.
The one distinction worth understanding: recreational or competitive
This is the difference that actually shapes your family's experience, so it's worth getting clear early. Recreational schools teach for enjoyment: a class a week, a concert at the end of the year, no pressure to do more. Competitive schools — sometimes the same school's "company" or "troupe" stream — train for eisteddfods and competitions, which means more hours, more cost, weekend commitments, and a different intensity.
Neither is better. They're for different things. The trouble only comes when a family lands in a competitive stream expecting a recreational one. For a first school, recreational is almost always the right starting point — and a good school will let a child move up later if they want to. Ask which one you're looking at.
Reading a school honestly
You can learn a surprising amount before you ever visit. A few things tend to signal a settled, real school: it's been running for a while, a named teacher or principal stands behind it, it has a fixed street address you could drive to, and its website tells you practical things — ages, days, a timetable — rather than just adjectives.
A few things are worth a second look, not as red flags exactly, but as questions to ask: a school with no address and only a social-media page; one that's changed hands or names repeatedly; one whose site is all feeling and no facts. None of these are disqualifying. They just mean you should phone and ask.
Then visit. Almost every good school offers a trial class or will let you watch one, and that single hour will tell you more than every website combined. Watch your child, and watch the teacher with the other children. You'll know.
Questions worth asking
You don't need all of these, but they're the ones that save families from surprises:
- Is this a recreational or a competitive class — and what's the difference here?
- Can we do a trial class, or watch one, before we commit?
- What does a year actually cost — term fees, plus costumes, concert fees, and exams if there are any?
- Are fees by term or by year, and what happens if we stop partway through?
- Who teaches this class, and how long have they been here?
- How big is the class, and what's the age range in it?
- Is there an end-of-year concert, and is it compulsory?
What it costs — the parts that surprise people
The class fee is rarely the whole number. The costs that catch families out are the ones around the edges: a costume (or several) for the end-of-year concert, the concert tickets themselves, exam fees if the school does graded exams, and uniform or shoes. None of it is unreasonable, but it's worth asking for the full picture up front so the December bill isn't a shock. A good school will tell you plainly; if the answer is vague, that itself is useful information.

Where a school's own materials give us enough to go on, we'll tell you honestly how it comes across. The rest is what the trial class is for.
