How San Francisco Ballet School comes across
San Francisco Ballet School comes across exactly as its standing suggests — the official academy of a major company, presenting itself with institutional confidence rather than salesmanship. It states plainly that it was "Founded in 1933" and is "the oldest professional ballet school in the United States," led by School Director Grace Holmes under Artistic Director Tamara Rojo, with a "dual mission: to train classical ballet dancers capable of joining a professional company and to offer all ages and levels the love of dance." The most striking claim is the pipeline — "nearly 70% of San Francisco Ballet dancers received training through the School's programs" — which frames its eight progressive levels (ages 8-18), selective Trainee Program, and Pre-Ballet (from age 2) as a genuine professional ladder. Yet it deliberately keeps a recreational door open with adult and summer classes. The overall impression is of an elite, company-affiliated conservatory where the serious are tracked toward careers, but a casual beginner is still explicitly welcomed.

About the school
San Francisco Ballet School is the official training academy of San Francisco Ballet, located on Franklin Street across from the War Memorial Opera House. Founded in 1933 by Gaetano Merola (the founder of San Francisco Opera) as part of the original San Francisco Operatic and Ballet School, it is the oldest professional ballet school in the United States. Programming spans Pre-Ballet for ages 2-7 (open enrollment, no audition), the audition-based School Year Program, the Summer Program, and Trainee divisions feeding directly into San Francisco Ballet — America's oldest professional ballet company.
