How Dance Mission Theater comes across
Dance Mission Theater comes across as an activist cultural institution as much as a place to take class — its self-description is unambiguous: "a thriving, women-led, artist-driven, multi-cultural, and multi-generational community and artistic sanctuary for women and queer-identified artists, artists of color, and culturally-specific dance ensembles dedicated to inclusiveness, fairness, and justice." It situates itself in the Mission at 3316 24th Street, operating under Krissy Keefer's Dance Brigade, "San Francisco's groundbreaking, social-change dance company founded in 1984." The programming reflects that politics — a youth "Grrrl Brigade," a "Liberation Academy," a D.I.R.T. Festival, "Black to Africa," and adult classes — and the site openly names a "$1 million stabilization campaign" to survive "the government's attack on Arts funding." The overall impression is of a mission-first, community-rooted dance center where social justice and culturally specific work are the organizing principle, and where a parent drawn to that values framework, more than to conservatory polish, would feel at home.
